Some problems demand the strongest AI you can build. Others demand the most human system you can imagine. This talk is about both. From patients needing motivation and education, to building the most competitive game-playing agents possible, to helping people find meaningful connections — this presentation reflects on a body of work united not by a single technique, but by a blend of rigorous AI research and human-centered thinking across wildly different domains: clinical applications, strategy game development, AI matchmaking, and intelligent software agents. We discuss what it means to evaluate systems that interact with real users under real constraints, drawing on pilot studies, iterative design processes, and the occasional unexpected finding. The goal is not just to build things that work, but things that matter.

Please, join us for this lecture!
