Az elméleti kutatások egyik fő területe a diszkrét matematikai modellek – elsősorban gráfok (hálózatok) és hipergráfok – strukturális és extremális tulajdonságai, és ezzel összefüggésben a kombinatorikus problémák algoritmikus (idő-) komplexitása.One main area of the laboratory’s theoretical research is the structural and extremal properties of discrete mathematical models, above all graphs (networks) and hypergraphs, together with the algorithmic (time) complexity of the related combinatorial problems.
A másik fő irány a diszkrét optimalizálási feladatok – például a ládapakolás különféle változatai – approximálhatósága, valamint az offline és online ütemezések versenyképességi aránya. The other main direction is the approximability of discrete optimisation problems, such as variants of bin packing, and the competitive ratio of offline and online scheduling.

GráfszínezésekGraph colourings
A klasszikus és a listás gráfszínezés mellett olyan színezéseket is vizsgálnak, ahol a színek számát valamilyen lokális feltétel felülről korlátozza. Strukturális és komplexitási eredmények mellett kimutatták e színezések szoros kapcsolatát a gráfok elvágó csúcs- és élhalmazaival.
Besides classical and list colouring, the group studies colourings in which a local condition bounds the number of colours from above. Alongside structural and complexity results, they revealed a close link between these colourings and the vertex and edge cuts of graphs.
- Zs. Tuza: Graph colorings with local constraints – a survey. Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 17 (1997).
Hipergráf-színezések, partíciókHypergraph colourings and partitions
They introduced a general model for hypergraph colourings and partitions of set systems and developed its theory in a series of papers. For C-colourings they solved several long-open problems: they found an asymptotically exact answer for the minimum size of a system of k-element transversals meeting every k-class partition of an n-set, disproving an earlier conjecture.

DominálásDomination
A laboratórium közlése szerint két évtizede nyitott kérdés megoldásaAccording to the laboratory, settles a question open for two decadesJellemezték azokat a gráfokat, amelyek minden összefüggő feszített részgráfjában létezik előírt tulajdonságú domináló részgráf. Adott minimális fokszám mellett felső korlátokat bizonyítottak a dominálási számra: 5 és 50 közötti minimális fokszámra ezek a közlés idején ismert legjobb becslések voltak, a bizonyítás pedig algoritmust is ad a korlátnak megfelelő domináló halmaz előállítására. Minimális fokszám 5 esetén a dominálási szám legfeljebb n/3. Hasonló eredmények születtek a 2-dominálásra is.
They characterised the graphs in which every connected induced subgraph contains a dominating subgraph with a prescribed property. For a given minimum degree they proved upper bounds on the domination number: for minimum degree between 5 and 50 these were the best known bounds at the time of publication, and the proof yields an algorithm that constructs a dominating set within the bound. For minimum degree 5 the domination number is at most n/3. Similar results were obtained for 2-domination.

Online és félig online ütemezésOnline and semi-online scheduling
A korábbiaknál jobb versenyképességi arányú online ütemező algoritmusokat konstruáltak, és bebizonyították, hogy több feladatra a részleges információt felhasználó félig online algoritmusok garantáltan hatékonyabbak bármely teljesen online módszernél.
They constructed online scheduling algorithms with better competitive ratios than previously known, and proved that for several problems well-designed semi-online algorithms, which use partial information, are guaranteed to beat any fully online method.

Számos biológiai, fizikai, kémiai, műszaki és közgazdasági folyamat olyan egyenletekkel modellezhető, amelyekben a rendszer pillanatnyi változása a korábbi állapotától is függ. Ezek leírására késleltetett differenciálegyenleteket és differenciaegyenleteket használunk. Many biological, physical, chemical, engineering and economic processes are modelled by equations in which the current rate of change depends on the system’s earlier states. Such processes are described by delay differential equations and difference equations.
Our aim is to develop new theoretical and numerical methods, and apply them to practical problems, that yield new results on the asymptotic behaviour, stability, oscillation and differentiability of solutions. Related work covers integral equations, impulsive equations, and integral and differential inequalities. The research is motivated mainly by models of biological processes, neural networks and mechanical motion.

The laboratory studies classes of integer and mixed-integer programming problems for the analysis, design, optimisation and decision support of complex processes and systems. Applications range from intracellular processes through industrial manufacturing systems to entire supply chains.
A folyamatok koncepcionális tervezésének elméleti alapja a P-gráf módszertan, az ütemezésé és az erőforrás-allokációé részben az S-gráf módszertan; mindkettő a csoportot alapító Friedler Ferenc professzor nevéhez kötődik. A módszertanok a feladat megfogalmazásától a modellezésen és a modellelemzésen át a legjobb megoldások gyakorlati értelmezéséig, matematikailag bizonyítottan helyes módon támogatják a teljes munkafolyamatot. Az algoritmusok a modell bizonyítottan optimális megoldásait állítják elő; a kari laboroldal szerint futásidőben is versenyképesek a vezető kereskedelmi optimalizálókkal. The theory behind conceptual process design is the P-graph framework; scheduling and resource allocation rest partly on the S-graph framework. Both are associated with Professor Ferenc Friedler, who founded the group. The frameworks support the whole workflow in a mathematically proven correct way, from formulating the problem through modelling and model analysis to interpreting the best solutions in practice. The algorithms produce provably optimal solutions of the model; according to the faculty’s laboratory page, they are also competitive in running time with leading commercial optimisers.

Okleveles mérnök informatikus (Veszprémi Egyetem, 1999), PhD (Veszprémi Egyetem, 2004). Hallgatóként 1997-ben kapcsolódott be a kutatócsoport munkájába, majd Friedler Ferenc témavezetésével doktoranduszként, később oktatóként lett a csoport tagja. 1999-ben L. T. Fan professzor meghívására kutatási ösztöndíjjal az Egyesült Államokban dolgozott; ezt követően számos közös publikációja született a Kansas State University kutatóival.MSc in Computer Engineering (University of Veszprém, 1999), PhD (University of Veszprém, 2004). He joined the group as a student in 1997, then became a member as a PhD student supervised by Ferenc Friedler and later as a lecturer. In 1999 he held a research fellowship in the United States at the invitation of Professor L. T. Fan, which led to numerous joint papers with researchers at Kansas State University.
His research focuses on extensions of the P-graph framework that broaden its industrial and logistics applications and support efficient implementation. A notable contribution is the time-constrained process network synthesis (TCPNS) problem class, which made the framework’s algorithms capable of solving synthesis and scheduling problems together.
